The Death of Bees

The Death of Bees - Lisa O'Donnell A charming and delightful debut novel. For the character of Nelly alone, I want to recommend this book to just about everyone – she’s quirky as hell but if you’re like me, you’ll love her. There’s a lovely macabre element to the whole thing - dead parents, buried under lavender in the backyard! - which makes the story a bit MORE than any of its kindred novel-types (family, what is family, precocious young children, etc) but it never tips into the gothic or anything that might turn off pure lit-fic readers. It's funny, it's lovely, it's a delightfully fast read, and I just felt happy when I finished it. What better rec can I give than that?Of course, I do go on about it a bit (quite a bit) more at RB - I found it worth my considered blatherings: http://wp.me/pGVzJ-FQ
